Two more good discs crossed my desk courtesy of one of my favorite Eurometal labels: AFM Records, who deserve props for maintaining a very tight focus on keeping old school, melodic metal alive, both from veteran acts and younger ones faithful to their time tested example in approach.
Regardless of the style, subgenre, or age of the band in question, if it’s released under their aegis, you can be assured of big choruses and plenty of comfortably ear pleasing melody – a trait which is sadly enough something that needs to be actively sought out in the post-grunge, post-alternative, post-death metal era.
Next Sunday, April 21 (7pm EST/4pm PST) on Third Eye Cinema: one of our proudest musical moments, as we feature a living legend!
With roots in the metal scene going back to the late 1970s, he fronted one of the premier bands of German metal, the mighty Accept! With his throaty, glass gargling yet powerful vocals shoring up Wolf Hoffman’s neoclassically based compositions, he helped put Accept at the very top echelons of traditional heavy metal!
After delivering 7 molten slabs of unforgettable and still influential anthems (including such classic platters as Restless and Wild, Balls to the Wall and Metal Heart), he broke off to begin his own equally hard hitting, stubbornly and persistently traditional metal band U.D.O., despite and throughout the musical nadir of the 1990s, where such sorry substitutes as grunge, hip hop and “alternative” dominated the airwaves and practically demonized the sound worldwide.
